The Shape of Water
Dear Mark,
Encased in expressionistic viscosity, I was mesmerised by the fluidity and liminalities portrayed in The Shape of Water. The emotional capabilities of those characters 'othered' by society are enchantingly heightened in a world lying somewhere between dawn and dusk, fantasy and reality, love and violence. Political significance can be attached to a Mexican director focusing on the humanisation of those who are considered undesirable by dominant rhetoric, and their characterisation as deeply humane and profoundly misunderstood mirrors the present day circumstances of society's underclasses.
What a beautiful nightmare.
